Eye Strain/Eye Pain: Computer Eye Strain, Treatment, Causes of Eye Pain, Pain in Eye, Eye Movement Pain

Eye strain and eye pain are common afflictions caused by trauma, illness, or fatigue.

Eye strain

The majority of generalized eye pain is caused by eye strain.  Eye strain can create burning, aching or stabbing sensations in the eye. Others may notice dry eye syndrome. Dry eyes indicate that the eye is failing to lubricate itself to the point of comfort.

Causes

Eye strain is caused by a wide range of contributing factors. For example, patients may notice increased eye strain following extended exposure to poor reading light. Patients may also notice strain after long periods of time in front of a computer or after reading print materials for a long stretch of time.

Medical Treatment

Patients may notice decreased eye strain with corrective vision aids. Other patients, upon the recommendation of an ophthalmologist, will ease their pain after completing a series of eye exercises designed to strengthen weak muscles.

Immediate relief

Eye strain may also be relieved by removing eyes from a close focal point and focusing on an object a few feet away from the computer or printed reading material.  In some instances, cold compresses on the eye area may ease painful sensations.

Dry Eye

Eye pain victims who experience the common affliction of dry eye can use ‘over the counter’ medications for “dry eye.”  Medications comparable to “Hypo Tears” are created by reputable eye care companies. They are inexpensive, and generally cost less than $10.00 per package. As always, prior to use of any health product, one should seek the counsel of a licensed medical care professional.

Eye pain

Eye pain results from irritation to the eye, migraine headaches, complications with contracts or corrective lenses, and sinus infections. Serious cases of eye pain may be caused by underlying disease or infection.  These cases may also be accompanied by bouts of minimized vision, itching, or increased sensitivity to light.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma patients suffer from abnormally high pressure in the eye. This pressure may contribute to increased eye pain. If untreated, glaucoma can cause blindness.

Photophobia

If an eye pain victim has pain following (or during) exposure to bright light, the individual may suffer from “photophobia.”  This temporary affliction normally accompanies viral infections such as influenza. After recovery from illness, pain and sensitivity to light will diminish and eventually disappear. If the condition fails to improve, the individual should seek care from medical professionals.

Medical Treatment

If you see a doctor for the treatment of eye pain, this professional will conduct a series of brief tests to diagnose your condition and exclude more serious illnesses or diseases.  An ophthalmologist, who is trained to treat eye diseases,   will test for glaucoma.  He will also examine your vision, movement and responsiveness of the eye muscles and the surface of the eye.

When to seek immediate care

If injury has affected the condition of your eye, you must seek immediate care. This is especially important for persons who have experienced traumatic episodes that have injured the eye or its muscle systems.  For example, eye pain that emerges after exposure to chemicals will need to be flushed with water or a medically approved neutralizing substance.

If you are involved in a car accident, or any accident involving a motor operated mode of transportation, you may need to have your eyes examined. In some cases, eye trauma does not emerge until a few hours have passed since the injurious act.

Summary

Most people will experience varying degrees of eye pain and eye strain at some point in their lives. To avoid long term complications, one should seek care from a health professional as needed.
